What “research use only” actually means
“For research use only” appears on almost every peptide vial sold online. It’s more than a disclaimer. It describes what a product is, what it isn’t, and who is responsible for how it’s used.
What the label means
Research use only (RUO) products are made for laboratory experiments. They are not manufactured under the regulations that govern drugs, and they haven’t been reviewed for safety or effectiveness in people or animals by Health Canada, the U.S. FDA or any similar regulator. The label tells buyers and regulators that the product is a reagent, not a treatment.
What it doesn’t mean
RUO isn’t a loophole. A label doesn’t change what a product is if it’s marketed, sold or used as a drug. Regulators look at the whole picture: product claims, website content, customer communications and how products are packaged. Selling a compound “for research” while describing human benefits, dosing or administration is treated as selling an unapproved drug.
Why responsible suppliers draw clear lines
At RoyalPep, that means:
- no health or performance claims, on product pages or anywhere else;
- no dosing, administration or medical advice, even when asked;
- a research-use and age acknowledgement on every order;
- declining orders that indicate human or veterinary use.
These lines protect researchers too. Clear documentation and an honest description of what a reagent is make it easier to justify purchases to institutions, ethics committees and journals.
What buyers are responsible for
When you buy an RUO product, you take on responsibility for using it only in appropriate research, handling it safely, and complying with the laws that apply where you work. If you’re unsure whether your use is permitted, check with your institution or a regulatory adviser before ordering.
