Research overview
MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, first described in 2015.
Studies in cells and mice have linked MOTS-c to activation of AMPK, regulation of the folate–methionine cycle and metabolic homeostasis. Later work reported that it can translocate to the nucleus under metabolic stress, and examined its relationship with physical capacity in aged mice.
